Bruno Genesio will become Stade Rennes’ new coach, AFP announced on Wednesday. The Breton club chose the former OL technician to succeed Julien Stéphan, who resigned.
A little less than two years after his departure from OL, Bruno Genesio will be back on the bench in Ligue 1. According to AFP, who quotes a source close to the club, Stade Rennes chose him to succeed Julien Stéphan who resigned from his post on Monday. Tuesday, L’Equipe announced that an agreement had been reached between the two parties despite the technician’s refusal at first.
Inducted in December 2015 as OL coach, replacing Hubert Fournier, Bruno Genesio will now have the opportunity to prove his worth outside the Lyon context, where he has known almost everything. The task does not look easy on paper as Stéphan had known how to be appreciated by his locker room and the supporters.
Leaving OL at the end of the 2018-2019 season, Bruno Genesio has not remained inactive since his departure. The former technician from Les Gones had a first experience abroad, appointed in July 2019 to head the Chinese club Beijing Guoan. Free since the end of his contract in January 2021, Genesio was quick to find a job.
A first meeting against OM
Approached from Montpellier in recent weeks, after a bad series of results for Michel Der Zakarian’s team, Bruno Genesio will find some well-known faces in Rennes, like Florian Maurice in the technical direction or Martin Terrier or Clément Grenier in the workforce.
Its first mission will be to qualify Rennes for the Europa League, while the team is currently in 9th place, three points behind 5th, with 12 more games to play. He will not be on the bench this Wednesday evening for the trip of the Bretons … to Lyon (19h, 28th day of Ligue 1) since Philippe Bizeul, former assistant to Stéphan will assume the interim. He should take up his duties afterwards and sit on the bench next Wednesday, traveling to the OM field in a late match.
Rennes remains on a series of bad results, fatal to Julien Stéphan, who felt incapable of being able to rectify the situation. It is up to Bruno Genesio to restore confidence to a group which experienced the Champions League at the start of the season and which has struggled since the start of the year.
