Generation’s Mistakes: Awakening to the Consequences

FACTS posts opinions with a wide range of viewpoints to encourage constructive debate.

Heavy thoughts are sitting on my brows, shaking my legs and digging my heels into my eyeballs. Is it possible that I am part of a generation that makes huge, historical mistakes twice in its conscious life?

The first time was at the beginning of the 90s, when we rushed to consume the freedom with the taste of a Korekom chocolate egg and did not feel how under our noses some swindlers disguised themselves with new biographies, kicked the suitcases with the dirty bundles under the bed and pretended that we were starving together. My generation did not do lustration, failed to condemn the criminals, who for half a century killed initiative and intelligence from the heads of Bulgarians, replacing the empty space with shallow-minded slogans and sugar-coated lies.

The second colossal mistake of my generation is choking us now. For at least a decade, we’ve been pretending not to see what’s going on outside our comfortable societal bubble. Caught up in desperate attempts to take back the country from the mafia, we did not pay attention to the rushing slop of conspiracy theories, hybrid suggestions and slowly implanted cretinism in the heads of Bulgarians.

The truth hit us in the temples only with the pandemic and kicked us in the kidneys with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We suddenly realized that a huge part of our countrymen have had their fill of stupidity, served to them abundantly, year after year, month after month, day after day, hourly.

I, like you, like us, like all of us, am guilty.

Well, just today I noticed a TV appearance of an old acquaintance of mine – Stoycho Kerev. A man who in the early 90s was a colleague of mine on the radio – he pretended to be a DJ and music editor. That is, he lied to everyone (some even successfully) that he understood music.

Then it became something like Kevorkian’s left vocal cord, and I probably lost track of it. Sometimes I’d see him doing some sort of mystery show, UFOs, and that kind of salty popcorn. But in this show from 5 years ago (which I only noticed today) I saw my old colleague talking about how there was a plan developed to destroy Bulgaria. The plan was from the Collective West, of course. Bulgaria had to be destroyed, obliterated, razed to the ground, because it is inconveniently located in the path of the Great Powers.

Could Stoicho, even a few years ago, invent this shallow but creepy story? After all, he also writes books, which seem to sell well… But we hear the same story, now distinctly, being repeated by many tin trumpets in our country. All these speakers, in unison, churn the same conspiratorial stew in which the severed heads of the Bulgarians are swimming.

Why did we pretend that this slop was not poured directly into the empty skulls of the Bulgarians? Where did we get this desolate arrogance? Now we gape and start hysterically repeating Smirnensky.

Yes, there really are two worlds in our country. The question is whether we will surrender to the sudden fear that we are the ones who are redundant.
