JAKARTA (RIAUPOS.CO) – Measles can be a serious problem for all age groups, not just children, adults can also be affected. According to the Indonesian Pediatricians Association (IDAI) children under 5 years old and adults over 20 years who get measles are more likely to experience complications. Complications that often occur are ear infections which can cause hearing loss, and diarrhea (1 in 10 children). Some can experience severe complications in the form of pneumonia (1 in 20 children) which is the most common cause of death in measles, and encephalitis (1 in 1,000 children) which can end in death. For every 1,000 children who get measles, 1 or 2 of them die.
“Adults can get measles. For example, mothers who become pregnant at a young age will be worried that if they catch measles, their children may experience disabilities,” said the Chairperson of UKK Infection and Tropical Diseases, the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), Dr. dr. Strengthen Surveillance
Director of Immunization Management of the Ministry of Health Prima Yosephine said the government was strengthening measles and rubella surveillance. So cases suspected of measles rubella, namely patients who have fever and rashes, must have specimens taken and examined in the laboratory. Surveillance is strengthened by immediately finding suspected cases of measles-rubella and immediately reporting them so that patients can be treated immediately and carry out further examinations.
The government is targeting to eliminate measles rubella in 2023 as soon as possible. Elimination is a situation where we can reduce the number of illnesses caused by measles to such an extent that it certainly does not become a public health problem anymore.
“But with the increase in measles cases in our country, of course the dream of achieving this elimination will be rather difficult to realize this year,” said dr. Prime.
