MOSCOW – General Sergey Surovikin, nicknamed as Russian Armageddon Generals, had been ordered to remain silent following the brief coup of the Wagner Group mercenaries on June 24.
Surovikin, deputy commander of the joint group of Russian troops in the war in Ukraine, has been suspended from his job. He is still being placed under house arrest.
Politicoin his report, Wednesday (16/8/2023), citing blogger the Russian military and local media, reported that there was no formal investigation into Surovikin’s actions, but that he was placed under house arrest.
Blog VChK-OGPUwho is considered close to Russian security forces, reported that General Surovikin had been allowed visitors, including some of his subordinates.
There was no official investigation, but Surovikin spent a long time in limbo answering uncomfortable questions. “The general has been advised to stay under the radar so he is forgotten,” the blog read.
The Russian blog also reported that the decision regarding Surovikin’s fate should be made by one person, and the longer it takes, the calmer this person will be. That figure is President Vladimir Putin.
Days earlier, Russian MP Viktor Sobolev reported that Surovikin had been removed from his duties as deputy commander of the Moscow forces in Ukraine.
Sobolev also hinted that Surovikin could still be useful to the Russian army in the future, if no serious violations were found against him.
