Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia– Protests by Myanmar demonstrators are said to destroy the country. In fact, the actual number of victims is not as much as reported.
This was revealed by Myanmar military general Min Aung Hlaing, who finally opened his voice about how the junta handled the protests, in his speech on the junta funnel television, Wednesday (7/4/2021). He said the “Civil Disobedience (CDM)” movement had stopped the economic activities of residents. Starting from work in hospitals, schools, roads, offices and factories.
“CDM is an activity to destroy the country,” he was quoted as saying by Reuters, quoted on Thursday (8/4/2021).
The junta said there were 248 protesters killed, including 16 police officers. This contradicts the institution’s report regarding AAPP’s political prisoners. The agency said 598 people had been killed since the coup took place on February 1, in which 2,847 people were detained.
Meanwhile, according to reports from a number of local media, the junta has been increasingly arresting those who reject the military rule. Not only activists, doctors, religious leaders and celebrities were also detained.
Most recently, the government has even issued a list of 120 fugitive national celebrities. One of Myanmar’s top actors, Paing Takhon, was also taken by the authorities.
The UN envoy to Myanmar, Christine Schranber Burgener, said she would visit Burma in the next few days. Fitch Solutions said in a report that Western sanctions targeting militants are unlikely to succeed in restoring democracy.
