General Motors will spend $ 2.2 billion on the re-equipment of the plant in Detroit for the production of electric vehicles Editorial Material

Production will begin in the second half of 2021.

The General Motors assembly plant in Detroit will be the first automaker to produce only electric cars and batteries for them, Forbes reports citing the company. That will cost GM $ 2.2 billion.

The plant will produce electric pickups, SUVs and the recently announced Cruise Origin unmanned vehicle. Production will begin in the second half of 2021, the company said.

The factory opened in 1985. Now it employs 900 employees in one shift. The plant assembled CT6 and Chevrolet Impala, but their production will close in the coming weeks, the newspaper writes. After the refurbishment of the plant, 2.2 thousand people will be able to work on it in several shifts, Forbes claims.

In early January 2020, sources at The Wall Street Journal reported that General Motors would resume selling Hummer in early 2022. Now the pickup will be completely electric, they said.
