General Assembly – Taliban demand the right to speak in New York

The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim, has appealed to the international heads of state and government to keep talking to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Speaking at the UN general debate in New York, he said boycotts only lead to polarization, while talks could produce positive results. After the withdrawal of western troops, the militant Islamists seized control of the country. Qatar plays a key role as a mediator in negotiations with them.

Meanwhile, the Taliban demanded the right to speak at the United Nations General Assembly. According to a UN spokesman, they protested against the country’s currently approved UN ambassador, Isacsai. The diplomat appointed by ex-President Ghani no longer represents Afghanistan, they said.
