General Sergej Surovikin, who goes by the nickname “General Armageddon”, was until recently the head of the Russian Air Force.
Surovikin was ousted as Russia’s air force chief just hours before Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was killed in a plane crash on 23 August.
Everything indicates that the plane crash was a planned assassination attempt against Prigozhin, and that the killing was ordered from the highest levels in the Kremlin.
Several local Russian media now report that Surovikin has got a new job. That’s what the think tank The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) writes in a assessment on Sunday. The former top general is said to have been appointed to a “peripheral” position.

The major Russian, state-controlled media have not mentioned the alleged appointment with a single word, writes ISW.
Tankesmia further writes that no major Russian media has mentioned Surovikin after President Vladimir Putin fired him as air force chief.

“ISW has previously assessed that Surovikin’s transition to a leadership position in SUS corresponds to a pattern in which the Russian military leadership has transferred failed and ineffective military leaders to peripheral positions far away from Ukraine, without dismissing them entirely from the Russian armed forces,” writes the think tank.

American sources have previously informed Reuters that Surovikin sympathized with the failed Wagner mutiny, which took place at the end of June. Surovikin has also been referred to as a VIP member of the Wagner group.
Ever since Surovikin was fired as head of the Russian Air Force in August, there have been rumors that he is missing.
Last week, however, a photo appeared on social media purportedly showing the former top general.
The picture was posted on Telegram by the Russian TV celebrity on Monday last week. Sobtsjak claimed that the photo was fresh.
Both BBC and the excavation site Bellingcat believes there is a high probability that it is Surovikin in the picture, and that the woman is most likely his wife Anna.
According to Bellingcat, the photo was taken at a Moscow restaurant near an exclusive neighborhood where Surovikin lives.

Surovikin has massive combat experience from Tajikistan, Chechnya and Syria.
Former colleagues have described Surovikin as “absolutely ruthless” and say he has “little respect for human life”.
Surovikin gained a reputation for being a ruthless military leader. This rumor was reinforced in 2004, when a subordinate committed suicide after receiving a heated reprimand from Surovikin, writes The Guardian.
Surovikin eventually earned the nickname “General Armageddon” due to his uncompromising and unorthodox approach to waging war.
