So now we can also influence the activity of that gene in the long term with medicines,” explains Dr. Nika Shuermans. “So we hope that in the future we can better protect people with obesity from the metabolic consequences. This concerns diabetes, fatty liver disease and high cholesterol, which we may be able to treat better.
