Gender Roles and Power Dynamics in Ex Machina: A Analysis of Femininity Portrayal in Science Fiction Films

Bachelor’s thesis, 2022

36 pages, grade: 1.7

synopsis or introduction

The bachelor’s thesis wants to examine how femininity is portrayed as inferior in Ex Machina. The power structure and its effects are taken into account. Ex Machina gives the impression of a clear power relationship in which it is clear which side is in control. Through cinematic means such as camera perspective and movement, the audience is repeatedly given a different impression until it is unclear who is really inferior. With the help of a theoretical introduction, which is explained below, as well as film analysis criteria, the construction of power over the feminine is examined. It will be determined whether there really is a shift in the balance of power.

The representation and relationships between femininity and masculinity in visual media are receiving increasing attention from researchers and recipients. The interest in gender equality is being discussed more strongly than ever. In science fiction works, the female has long played a subordinate role, if she is given a place at all in the male-connoted world of technology. As women’s emancipation progresses, their role in films is also adjusted, but in science fiction films they still follow certain patterns: the woman embodies the unknown, the other and is usually not an acting subject, but a dominated object.

The 2016 film Ex Machina by Alex Garland presents exactly this problem. With the help of the introduction of artificial intelligence into an ideal female body, the film stages a power structure between the genders and shows how the female body, whose freedom and identity, is determined . A multi-layered system of control emerges in the relationship between the male researcher and the female researcher.
