Gender-neutral education: what is it and how does it work? Parents respond to us

“Little girls like pink, are flirtatious and bad at math. Little boys don’t cry, play football and are naturally courageous”: barely out of the cradle, children already internalize the gender stereotypes conveyed by those around them and society. Tenacious and seemingly harmless prejudices, which nevertheless widen inequalities between women and men.

Thus, from the age of 4, children already distinguish a hierarchy between genders by associating power and domination with masculinity, points out a CNRS study. Published works in the magazine Science show for their part that little girls are convinced, at only 6 years old, that intelligence is a characteristic reserved for boys – a trend which could explain (in part) the fact that women close the doors to certain career paths. study, and encounter more difficulties in accessing prestigious positions.

To ensure a more egalitarian future for their offspring, more and more parents are choosing to adopt “gender-neutral” education at home. If the concept repels many, it is not intended to deny the existence of a sex assigned at birth, nor to erase at all costs the feminine and masculine attributes of one’s children: the idea is rather to encourage them to build their own identity by opening the field of possibilities to them, without taking into account gender-related injunctions.
