Gender Disparity in eSports: Why Men Dominate Shooting Games

Electronic sports, or eSports, have become increasingly popular in recent years, attracting a diverse audience of players and spectators.

However, when we look at shooters such as “Counter-Strike” and “Rainbow Six”, we notice a worrying trend: the audience for these games is still predominantly male.

The Pesquisa Game Brasil (PGB), responsible for mapping consumer profiles in the gaming world for a decade, investigated the Brazilian eSports community.

The results reveal that electronic sports are still mostly consumed by men, especially on the PC. Carlos Silva, coordinator of PGB, points out that certain games contribute to this gender disparity.

In addition, the research indicates a drop in the consumption of eSports on mobile devices, influenced by the decrease in the popularity of the game “Free Fire”, which also affects the profile of players in Brazil.

“When you separate by platforms, on smartphones women still have a substantial presence, but when we take the PC gamer profile we have more men. And that’s why we talk, right? A good part of eSports is still on the PC. So, when you break it down by product by game, you start to understand some numbers”, explained the PGB coordinator.

Even with the results showing that the male audience is predominant, coordinator Mauro Berimbau suggests that women make up a considerable portion of the gamer audience. For him, there is a market of opportunities for game companies to serve the female audience.

“You look at the opportunities and the percentage of women who are in games today and bring this to sports, for example, these are important movements, right? We talk about designing games and championships that value the female audience precisely to transform this environment even more.”

Through the collected data, it is possible to identify the specific characteristics of each audience. For example, research reveals that “Counter-Strike” attracts a more mature and predominantly male audience, while “Free Fire” has a gender balance.

This information is extremely valuable for those involved in the eSports scene, allowing them to better understand their target audience and adjust their strategies accordingly.

“These are important things that potentially can help all teams. ‘I’m going to try to position our brand, I’m going to take it to sponsors to try to do something for our female fans’, for example. It’s thinking about strategies”, concludes Berimbau.
