Working women who have a relationship with another worker, on average provide 37 percent of the joint income. Regardless of the stage of life, with or without children, men earn on average more than half, according to Statistics Netherlands.

In the Netherlands, there are about 2.4 million two-income households. These are couples consisting of two people who have income from work and are younger than the state pension age. Statistics Netherlands examines the differences between parents and non-parents, and between under-45s and over-45s.

The Dutch man usually earns the most of the two in a relationship. He scrapes together 62 percent of the income. Women earn an average of 37 percent of total income. The man usually works full-time and the woman part-time, i.e. less than 35 hours per week.

Women without children up to the age of 45 contribute relatively the most at 44 percent. In that phase of life, the man provides 55 percent of the income. On average, fathers earn the most of the male two-income earners. Women with children then often spend more time with their children and other care tasks.

The outgoing cabinet would like to see women work more, partly to fill the gaps in the labor market. Although some of them would be happy to do so, one of the conditions is that the work is in line with the care tasks they have, according to previous research by Statistics Netherlands. Women are also more likely to think about working more if there is no longer enough money coming in for the standard of living they are used to.
