Health Center/Comprehensive Report
The Taiwan Cancer Foundation conducted a survey on HPV awareness among parents of Taiwanese schoolchildren in April this year (2023) and found that parents have “gender differences” in HPV prevention and infection risks. It also found that the proportion of parents with daughters at home know correct information. , higher than parents who only have sons at home.
There are “gender differences” in HPV prevention and infection risks, and it was also found that parents with daughters at home have a higher rate of knowing correct information than parents with only sons at home. (Schematic diagram/Hsinchu City Health Bureau)
The Taiwan Cancer Foundation, the Taiwan Vaccine Promotion Association, and the Taiwan Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Association jointly call for HPV infection to be regardless of gender. Both men and women should pay attention to HPV prevention and administer HPV vaccines. They also hope that men should be included in HPV prevention and treatment policies to accelerate the Achieve the goal of eliminating cervical cancer.
HPV awareness survey: Over 80% of parents do not think that their son’s infection with HPV is serious
The Taiwan Cancer Foundation conducted an online survey to understand the HPV awareness of parents of school children. There were 1,000 valid samples. The survey was conducted on the awareness of HPV infection and disease. The results found that:
Parental awareness-related to infection:
47% of parents believe that their daughters are at high risk of infection, while only 7% of parents believe that their sons are at high risk of infection. At the same time, there is almost no such obvious difference in the perception of risks of viral or bacterial infections other than HPV.
Nearly one-third of parents believe that their daughter’s HPV infection will have serious health effects, but more than 80% of parents do not think that their son’s infection with HPV is a serious matter.
Parents are worried that their daughters are twice as likely to be infected with HPV as their sons.
More than 50% of parents believe that it is necessary for their daughters to receive the HPV vaccine, which is more important than other vaccines. Only 1/4 of parents believe that their sons need to receive the HPV vaccine.
Parental awareness-disease related:
Parents with daughters have a higher percentage of “knowing” correct information than parents with only sons in the family.
Only 40% of parents know that HPV vaccine can prevent “head and neck cancer” and 35% of parents know that HPV vaccine can prevent “anal cancer”.
76% of parents know that the HPV vaccine can prevent “cervical cancer”.
Most parents only know that the HPV vaccine only prevents cervical cancer, but they do not know that it can prevent HPV-related cancers such as head and neck cancer and anal cancer.
The risk of HPV does not differentiate between men and women. Men should be included in the HPV vaccination policy.
In fact, both men and women are at risk of HPV infection. Dr. Li Bingying, honorary director of the Taiwan Vaccine Promotion Association, said that the probability of men being infected with HPV in their lifetime is more than 90%, which is higher than 80% of women. Moreover, the proportion of men who develop antibodies after infection is significantly lower than that of women. , men are actually a “vulnerable group”.
In addition, long-term HPV infection not only carries the risk of cervical cancer, but also may cause cauliflower, penile cancer, anal cancer, head and neck cancer, etc. Liao Liren, deputy secretary-general of the Taiwan Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Association, mentioned that a local study in Taiwan in 2023 found that about 1.6-2.1% of healthy men and women are infected with HPV in the oropharynx, and currently about 30% of oropharyngeal cancers are caused by HPV infection. Yes, the proportion continues to increase.
A document published by WHO in “Lancet Global Health” in August this year also pointed out that men are more likely to be frequently infected and transmit HPV than women. It is estimated that 1 in 3 men over 15 years old will be infected. At least one HPV type, and 1 in 5 people is infected with one or more highly cancer-causing HPV types.
Therefore, Tsai Li-juan, deputy executive director of the Taiwan Cancer Foundation, called on the government to include men over the age of 15 in the comprehensive HPV prevention and treatment policy, and the HPV vaccine should be administered to both genders nationwide. Lai Jiming, CEO of the Taiwan Cancer Foundation, also mentioned that many advanced countries have also adopted the strategy of vaccinating men and women against HPV. Vaccination for both sexes is an international trend, but Taiwan has lagged behind. Both men and women should pay attention to HPV prevention and vaccination. (Health Medical Network)
