Gender Bias and Age Discrimination in Media: The Return of The Dream Factory and Its Controversy

The return of The dream factory on public broadcasting has received a lot of attention in recent days. Striking: ‘former’ presenter Bart Peeters also returns with the program, while the presenters from the 90s, Rani De Coninck and Sabine De Vos, are replaced by a young woman, Gloria Monserez.

The reaction of Filip Van Ongevalle in this newspaper (DS 5 June) is therefore justified: the program confirms the gender clichés. In times when discrimination is hot news, there is still very little attention for age discrimination against women in the media.

The discussion has opened an old wound in me. A few years ago I was asked for a brand new TV program called Is there a doctor in the hall?, which was to be presented by Philippe Geubels, together with a doctor. After thorough preparation and a whole day of test recordings, everyone was enthusiastic about the result. The atmosphere was good. Everyone happy.

The program was offered to the public broadcaster, accepted and programmed on the then Een (now VRT 1) under one condition: for the doctor in the hall, the VRT preferred a young female doctor. The producer was given the unpleasant task of telling me that. It hit hard. I hesitated to bring it up, but I didn’t. You never know for sure if age is the real reason. It’s also possible I just didn’t fit into the jolly program. So you turn the page.

Shortly after that phone call, I saw a vacancy for a female doctor for the new television program. It does gnaw, not sure what the real reason was. It is noticeable that some female screen faces move from television to radio and that female radio celebrities of a certain age move to a weekend program.
