Gendarmes Sentenced for Allowing Colleague to Drive in Fatal Accident

Two gendarmes, tried on October 17 for letting their colleague “close to an alcoholic coma” get behind the wheel and cause a fatal accident, were sentenced this Tuesday to nine months and eighteen months in prison suspended by the Grenoble criminal court , we learn from the lawyer for the civil parties. The sentences are more severe than those demanded by the prosecution, which had requested the release of one of them. Each nevertheless faced five years in prison.

One, the passenger, was being prosecuted for manslaughter. Ultimately, the court reclassified the proceedings as “non-prevention of crime.”

2.54 g of alcohol/liter of blood

On February 26, 2019, his colleague Loïc D., who was not on duty, spent part of the afternoon drinking with his comrades. His alcohol level was 2.54 g/liter of blood at the time of the accident. Around 7 p.m., “launched like a racing car at 120-150 km/h”, he hit the car of a retired couple on a secondary road in Bourgoin-Jallieu.

Crushed inside their vehicle, the two sixty-year-olds did not survive the shock. Their children then filed a complaint. The driver was also sentenced to eighteen months in prison. He was also removed from the police force.
