Gen Z Values Financial Stability Over Romantic Compatibility in Relationships: Study

According to a study by the Northwestern Mutual Generation Z, young people ages 18 to 25, appear to place more value on financial stability in a relationship than on romantic compatibility.

The study, which asked around 2,700 people about their relationship to money and its influence on their lives, shows, according to “ Essence ” indicates that nearly half (49 percent) of Gen Z place more importance on money than romantic connections in relationships. In comparison, only 40 percent of Millennials, 35 percent of Gen X, and 30 percent of Baby Boomers do so.

Gen Z influencer shares on TikTok Suki Tegan openly share her tips for dating rich men. She recommends to her approximately 155,000 followers: “Date for money, not for love.”

Because Suki is of the opinion: “It’s just an unspoken agreement that you’re pretty and he’s rich.”

Financial burden of dating

Suki is not alone with her attitude. Because, as “Essence” reports, financial aspects have a major influence on the dating behavior of Millennials and Gen Z.

A report from Lendingtree from September 2022 found that 22 percent of Millennials and 19 percent of Gen Z in the U.S. fell into debt from spending on dating. The average spending on a date is about $91 (about €83), according to the report.

“Everything is getting more expensive,” LendingTree Chief Credit Analyst Matt Schulz was quoted as saying in the report. “It’s not just the new clothes, roses, driving services, the fancy dinner, concerts or the coffee afterwards – it’s everything.” As a consequence, Gen Z would sometimes give up dating completely and would rather invest the money in meeting friends.

Gen Z dating behavior influenced by crises

Due to the various economic crises that the young generation had to endure in their formative years, it is unsurprising that money plays a central role for them.

Veronica Fuentes, CEO of Northwestern Mutual, tells Essence, “Younger generations are under multiple types of pressure. They are more vulnerable to economic downturns, they have had less time to prepare for price fluctuations, and they may not have experienced financial challenges as a couple.”
