According to the study, while organizations view AI as a technology with strategic importance in strengthening their cybersecurity strategies, the widespread adoption of Gen AI across a wide range of industries leads to increased vulnerability. Generative AI poses three major risk areas for organizations: more sophisticated attacks from a larger number of actors, a growing attack surface, and the increase in vulnerabilities throughout the lifecycle of individual gene AI solutions. Misuse of AI and generative AI by employees exacerbates the situation and can significantly increase the risk of data leaks.
“The use of AI and Gen AI is a double-edged sword: on the one hand, it creates previously unknown risks; on the other hand, organizations can detect cybersecurity incidents faster and more precisely through AI. Intelligent tools help IT security teams avert attacks, further develop their strategies and constantly monitor the security landscape in the constant threat situation. What is crucial is the right infrastructure for data management, suitable frameworks and ethical guidelines for integrating AI, as well as the human factor. Training and awareness programs for employees are part of everyday life,” says Mete Boz, cybersecurity expert at Capgemini in Germany.
Two thirds of organizations fear a greater risk
Nearly all organizations surveyed (97 percent) reported security breaches or issues related to the use of generative AI in the past year. Gen AI also poses new risks such as hallucinating and generating biased, harmful or inappropriate content, as well as prompt injection attacks. Two in three organizations (67 percent) fear data poisoning and the loss of sensitive data across datasets used to train Gen AI models.
The ability of generative AI to generate highly realistic synthetic content also poses new risks: More than two in five of the organizations surveyed (43 percent) say they have suffered financial losses as a result of a deepfake attack.
Almost 6 in 10 companies believe it is necessary to increase their cybersecurity budget in order to strengthen their defenses accordingly.
AI and Gen AI essential for attack detection and response
The survey of 1,000 organizations considering or already using AI for their cybersecurity shows that most are doing so to strengthen their data, application and cloud security. Thanks to this technology, they can analyze huge amounts of data in a very short time, recognize patterns and predict potential security breaches.
Since integrating AI into their security operations centers (SOCs), more than 60 percent of respondents have reduced the time to detect attacks by at least 5 percent; nearly 40 percent noted a reduction in security incident resolution times of at least 5 percent.
Three out of five organizations surveyed (61 percent) view AI as essential to effective threat response, enabling them to implement proactive security strategies against increasingly sophisticated attackers. In addition, the same proportion of respondents assume that Gen AI will enable them to implement proactive defense strategies in the long term and identify threats more quickly. More than half of them also believe that this technology will make it easier for cybersecurity analysts to focus more on strategies to combat complex threats.
