Lee Reid, an IT⁤ service delivery manager and avid photographer from near Newcastle, England, ⁣described his experience capturing the shower: “I‍ could actually see the meteors on the drive up, and I was ​getting, obviously, quite excited. Lindisfarne​ seems to be my lucky spot… behind me⁤ was cloud​ but⁤ a big ​portion of the skies, at sort of 5.30am in the north east region was clear. It’s amazing because when you’re planning things for a few days and hoping and praying for some clear skies… so it’s good when ‌a plan comes together.”

Reid’s journey into astrophotography began after a trip to ⁣Iceland⁣ to‍ photograph the Northern Lights. “I bought a camera a week before my trip, primarily for the Northern Lights, and my photography journey ‍spawned from than, which ‌was March 2023,” ‌he shared. “Now any chance I get, I’m now out⁤ in the ⁢dark skies,⁢ usually Northumberland.”

While the Geminids are​ known to produce over 150 meteors per hour at their peak, light pollution and other atmospheric conditions often reduce the visible number. The meteors themselves are described by the Royal Observatory ⁢in greenwich as “very bright, moderately fast, and​ are unusual in being multi-coloured – mainly white, some yellow and‌ a few green, red and blue.” These vibrant colors are attributed to‍ the ⁢presence of trace metals like sodium and calcium, similar to the elements used in fireworks.

The Geminid meteor‌ shower, first observed in 1862, originates from debris shed by asteroid 3200 Phaethon.
