Gemini unknowingly plays with sharp mortar shell

11-year-old brothers Jurre and Quinn from Heino were playing in a mountain of sand on their parents’ land after school yesterday. Jurre threw a stone. Or so he thought. It turned out to be an English mortar shell from World War II.

The twins played near the cowshed. Due to construction work, a piece of land was excavated there last month and there is a mountain of sand next to it.

Jurre thought to find a stone in the heap and threw it away twice. The uncle of the two saw that by chance, came closer and became suspicious. He picked up his phone to call his brother, who was working a little further away.

“My brother called and said the twins were playing with a grenade. I thought it would be all right,” said father Edwin. RTV East. But when his brother sent a photo, the dairy farmer knew it was serious.

More ammunition

The mortar shell was now in a wheelbarrow with sand and the emergency services were on their way. The Explosives Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD) had to be involved. Eventually two English mortar shells, several hand grenades and dozens of bullets were found. All from World War II.

This morning, the EOD confirmed that the twins had been incredibly lucky: the grenades were on edge and could have just exploded. Especially since Jurre threw the grenades twice.
