Gelsenkirchen Police Accident: 5 People and Service Dog Injured – July 2023 Update

Gelsenkirchen

A traffic accident involving the police occurred on Friday, July 28, 2023 in Gelsenkirchen-Buer, in which five people and a service dog were slightly injured. A patrol car crew drove at around 8:15 p.m. with the siren and blue lights on Emil-Zimmermann-Allee in the direction of Kurt-Schumacher-Straße and intended to cross the Emil-Zimmermann-Alle/Adenauerallee intersection straight ahead in order to maintain the direction of travel. At the same time, a 49-year-old woman from Gelsenkirchen drove in her car along Adenauerallee in the direction of Schweidnitzer Strasse. In the crossing area, there was a collision between the patrol car and the Gelsenkirchen woman’s vehicle. The 49-year-old and her 47-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries in the collision. The driving 22-year-old police inspector, the 22-year-old inspector candidate in the passenger seat and the 35-year-old police inspector, who was sitting in the back seat of the patrol car, were just as easily injured. At the same time, a service dog handler and service dog drove a civilian vehicle on Emil-Zimmermann-Allee in the direction of Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse. In order to avoid another collision in the crossing area, he had to brake hard so that the dog inside its transport box in the trunk hit the walls of the box and also injured itself. Both the patrol car and the Gelsenkirchen woman’s vehicle were no longer roadworthy and were towed away.

For reasons of neutrality, the investigations into the cause of the accident and the procedure itself are being conducted by the Krefeld police.
