Gelderland wants to organize new event Super World Championships cycling in 2027 | NOW

Gelderland wants to organize the Super World Championships cycling in 2027. The Super World Championship is a comprehensive cycling event, which will be held for the first time in Glasgow in 2023.

All cycling parts, from road cycling to mountain biking and artificial bicycles, are covered at the Super World Championship. The event will be held once every four years in 2027 so is the second edition.

Organizer of sports events TIG Sports and sports center Papendal, together with cycling association KNWU, have assessed the interest in a Super World Cup in the Netherlands.

The parties approached Gelderland and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, among others, according to a letter sent by the Mayor and Aldermen of Arnhem to the municipal council in that city on Tuesday.

Arnhem, Nijmegen, Ede, Apeldoorn de Achterhoek and the province of Gelderland are making a bid book under the name Gelrestad Sport, which the KNWU will offer to the international cycling association UCI at the end of March. Participating municipalities and the other authorities must decide before the end of June how they want to participate and how much money they have to spare.

In 2016 there were already three Giro stages in Gelderland.

Final bid signed in July

A provincial and a government contribution is an explicit condition for the municipalities to proceed with the bid. If all of this is sorted out, the final bid will be signed in July, after which the UCI will make a decision in September.

Gelrestad Sport calls the Super World Cycling Championships “a dream event”, which will provide social and economic benefits.

Gelderland already has experience in organizing international cycling events. In 2016, the first three stages of the Giro d’Italia were held in the three provinces and five years earlier, the track cycling World Championships took place in Omnisport in Apeldoorn.
