Dutch anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders, swore he would become Prime Minister of the Netherlands. He said this after his party won the most seats in the Dutch elections.
Reported ReutersSunday (26/11/2023), Wilders made a long post on X. He expressed his frustration with other parties because of their unwillingness to cooperate with the Freedom Party (PVV).
Wilders said he would ‘continue to moderate’ his positions if necessary to gain power. He also vowed that he would take over as PM of the Netherlands.
“Today, tomorrow or the next day, the PVV will be part of the government and I will be prime minister of this beautiful country,” Wilders wrote.
Although Wilders’ Freedom Party (PVV) is well ahead of its rivals in the November 22 vote, it is expected to win only 25% of the seats in the Dutch parliament. This means that Wilders must work with at least two other parties to form a government.
On Friday, the conservative VVD party led by caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte said it would not participate in Wilders’ joint cabinet. But the new leader of the VVD, Dilan Yesilgoz, has not ruled out offering external support to Wilders’ government.
Pieter Omtzigt, who leads the centrist party and is also seen as a partner in Wilders’ government, the NSC, said cooperation would be difficult because of the extreme positions Wilders appears to violate the Dutch constitutional protection of religious freedom. Coalition talks in the Netherlands usually take months.
Attitudes regarding parties’ willingness to cooperate may change over time. If Wilders cannot form a government, then in theory there would be a possible combination of more centrist groups, excluding the PVV, while new elections would be a last resort.
