BVIEvery week, Geert Hoste (63) gives his own unique and ironic view of the world in ‘Dag Allemaal’.
During the floods there was criticism because the mayor of ‘Samson’ had not stopped the water! Mr. Mayor is about the clumsiest character in the rich assortment in that toddler series. You cannot explain it abroad that people in Flanders, even during disasters, have more confidence in the caricature of a ruler than in the original. Walter De Donder reacted more fiercely than flag waver Laura Tesoro. Ahuuum! Ahem! He was working on an important file in the Sportpaleis! He told his colleagues that he had to work. And that is different from peeing in flower boxes or against police cars.
Everything else is going well in the happiest country in the world. Not a bad word. On New Year’s Eve, cities were half demolished or destroyed. Destroyed bus shelters, burning cars, attacks on fire brigades, police cars and ambulances. But rest assured: everything is under control. The mayors were not to blame, because they had banned fireworks. Their own evaluation afterwards was downright positive. As in: ‘On New Year’s Eve only four bus shelters were destroyed, which is fewer than last year.’ Cars were also set on fire. But: ‘Is that bad?’ it sounded positive. Because 30% more new cars were sold in Belgium in 2023, resulting in traffic jams becoming even more numerous and longer. To achieve the climate standard, the government provides subsidies for new electric cars. Well, the greening would go faster if there were a bonus per car that was set on fire. An end-of-year bonus for rioters. And it would immediately ease their suffering for the ban on fireworks.
Governing means looking ahead. Our government already took preventive measures for the coming end of the year in the first week of January. To prevent the destruction of those semi-open bus shelters, 3,200 stops were abolished by Minister Lydia Peeters (Half Open Vld). At this rate, we will be rid of all bus shelters in six years! On New Year’s Eve 2030, there will be none left to destroy. And that is by no means the only super positive news. The requested price increase for De Lijn tickets will not apply to the canceled buses and to fare dodgers. Moreover, Flemish people who do not take the bus no longer have to buy a ticket. Always nice at De Lijn. Minister Peeters can immediately start working at ‘Samson’ after the elections.
