Gebran Bassil Appoints Naji Hayek as Deputy Head of Free Patriotic Movement for Foreign Affairs

The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, MP Gebran Bassil, praised the leader of the movement, Naji Hayek, during his official announcement of assuming the position of deputy head of the movement for foreign affairs.

He described Basil Hayek as “a man of difficult situations, sometimes shocking and always honest,” adding: “Your sometimes hurtful words came from a wounded heart and were frank and careful.”

He added: “We used to disavow your words that expressed your personal opinion, but today the situation is different. Your words and thinking today express the position of the “current,” because I chose you as vice president for relations with foreign parties, and your mission is great, which is to network relations with these parties.”

It is noteworthy that the appointment of Basil Hayek to the aforementioned position constituted a double shock to the audience of the “movement” and to the audience of the allies, as Hayek is known for his “extremist” positions against “Hezbollah,” in addition to his sometimes sharp “Christian-right-wing” rhetoric compared to the movement’s media-approved literature.

Usually, the “movement” denied any leadership or reporting capacity with Hayek, but it never occurred to him that he denied affiliation with the Free Patriotic Movement, despite the positions he was expressing that contradicted the movement’s policy, at least declared.

The duo’s fans interacted negatively with this appointment on social media, and the hashtag #Hayek occupied a prominent position on the “X” platform, and Hayek’s positions were recalled, especially since the appointment came after talk of progress in the dialogue with “Hezbollah.”

Observers believe that Bassil, through this appointment, is simulating an attempt to reposition himself after the weakening of the “Mar Mikhael” alliance, and the distribution of his cards left and right. Hayek, who has a speech close to that of the “Lebanese Forces” at the level of conscience and the era of the “Lebanese Resistance,” undoubtedly seeks to emulate an additional Christian mood for the “movement.” Of course, Basil’s decision is not devoid of regional calculations and partisan circles of influence within the movement.
