GE plans to build two new offshore wind turbine manufacturing facilities in New York

GE plans to build two new offshore wind turbine manufacturing facilities in New York for up to 4.6 GW

  • The facilities are dependent on the company winning enough contracts in ongoing tenders
  • A facility would build rotor blades for wind turbines and create approximately 650 direct jobs
  • The second facility, which would produce nacelles for offshore wind turbines, would create about 220 direct jobs
  • Together, the facilities would create nearly 1,000 construction jobs and support approximately 1,400 indirect jobs

(WK-intern) – Schenectady, NY – GE announced today that it has submitted a plan to build two new manufacturing facilities in New York if it wins sufficient orders from customers in the state’s ongoing tender for up to 4.6 GW of offshore wind .

To support localized content and New York’s vision to become the nation’s offshore wind powerhouse, GE proposed building the factories with Carver Companies at their Port of Coeymans site.

These state-of-the-art factories are designed to advance New York as the foundation of a clean energy economy while supporting the local community through lasting jobs and positive economic impact:

Blades Facility: Should GE secure sufficient order volume, LM Wind Power, a subsidiary of GE, is poised to construct a state-of-the-art facility to manufacture blades for offshore wind turbines, creating approximately 650 direct jobs, of which approximately 35% will come from disadvantaged communities. Around 900 additional indirect jobs and over 500 construction jobs would be created along with associated economic benefits worth millions.
Gondola system: GE Vernova, GE’s portfolio of energy companies, proposed building a state-of-the-art facility to build nacelles that house the generator components of a wind turbine. This facility would create approximately 220 direct jobs, with approximately 35% of those jobs coming from disadvantaged communities. In addition, nearly 500 indirect jobs and about 500 construction jobs would be created, along with associated economic benefits running into the millions.

GE’s proposal includes specific commitments to recruit and train new employees from economically disadvantaged communities. For example, the company will launch an outreach program called Pathways to Wind to provide insight, education and training in the burgeoning offshore wind industry to historically underserved communities. To support this program, GE has engaged 24 educational institutions, including the Office of Workforce Development and Community Education at SUNY Schenectady County Community College and SEAT [Social Enterprise and Training] Center, and signed 15 Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with New York companies that will allow the company to enhance diversity and inclusion in its staffing efforts.

GE’s approach to environmental compliance and mitigation will help ensure that the development and operation of the offshore wind turbine blades and nacelles at the Port of Coeymans comply with all federal, state and local laws. Our approach will also help promote sustainable development practices in the state and beyond.

The two plants would produce components for GE’s next-generation Haliade-X offshore wind turbine. An earlier version of the Haliade-X was the first turbine in excess of 12 megawatts (MW) in the industry and the only one to have full type certification to operate at 14.7 MW. This model of Haliade-X has been in operation for three years and has been selected by several customers including for the 3.6 gigawatt (GW) Dogger Bank wind farm. This project will be the largest in the world when completed. Others that have opted for the earlier model include the 800 MW Vineyard wind project, which will be the first large offshore wind project in the United States, and the 1100 MW Ocean Wind 1 project. The next generation model of the Haliade-X builds on the proven platform of its predecessor, but includes some design changes and upgrades.
