GDL Train Drivers’ Strike Causes Disruption to Rail Traffic in Baden-Württemberg

With its strike on Wednesday morning, the GDL train drivers’ union caused disruption to rail traffic in Baden-Württemberg. The emergency timetable started as planned, a spokeswoman for Deutsche Bahn said this morning. Accordingly, the railway only offers 20 percent of its usual range of long-distance services. The GDL expects strike participation to be at least as high as in previous warning strikes, said a union spokesman. There were initially no exact numbers.

The strike initially began in freight traffic on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. In passenger transport, the strike began at 2 a.m. early Wednesday morning. The planned end of the industrial action is Friday evening at 6 p.m.

The railway wants to offer an emergency timetable on the three days of the strike. On Tuesday evening, the company also failed in the second instance at the regional labor court in Frankfurt in its attempt to have the strike legally stopped. In freight transport, the first train drivers had already stopped work regardless of the pending court decision.

The railway and the GDL have been negotiating new collective agreements since the beginning of November. The main sticking point is the GDL’s demand for a reduction in weekly working hours with full wage compensation. The railway rejects this. GDL boss Claus Weselsky therefore declared the negotiations to have failed and criticized the fact that no compromises could be found with the federally owned company.
