(ANSA) – LONDON, MARCH 29 – The ban on sporting beards for men in uniform of Her British Majesty’s armed forces, a restriction traditionally in force in modern military history, is no longer in force. This was announced by the island’s high command, with the blessing evidently of the UK Ministry of Defence, as certified by a spokesperson to the BBC. The reform of the codes of decorum imposed on those who wear the uniform takes effect immediately and comes after a review lasting several months of the rules on the external appearance of soldiers, sailors and airmen. The objective is to make the armed forces more inclusive and more in line with the current perception of military style and decorum, as well as meeting requests for greater freedom “of the younger generations” compared to certain too rigorous formalisms. Beards and moustaches, specified the spokesperson of the General Staff, will however have to be looked after for those who want to have them, and “will be checked periodically”: as happens with hair, which must generally remain short. The green light for bearded soldiers is already consolidated in the armies of European NATO allied countries such as “Germany, Belgium or Denmark”, underlines the BBC. While in the Kingdom until now there was a special authorization reserved only for British soldiers required to have a beard due to their religious faith (observant Muslims, Sikhs, Rastafarians), provided that it was not too long and did not jeopardize their operational efficiency, safety, health or hygiene.
