GB returns 19 archaeological pieces to Mexico

Mexico City. The United Kingdom government delivered 19 archaeological pieces to Mexico for “rematriation.”

The delivery took place at the headquarters of the Mexican embassy in the United Kingdom, where ambassador Josefa González-Blanco Ortiz-Mena received the pieces “as part of a voluntary restitution effort agreed between said office and the British citizen Michael Johnson.” .

The 19 assets were recovered on April 30 and are considered movable monuments owned by the Mexican nation, defined and protected in accordance with the Federal Law on Archaeological, Artistic and Historical Monuments and Zones.

According to federal agencies, these objects correspond to the pre-Hispanic era and will return to the country via diplomatic means.

At the delivery ceremony, citizen Michael Johnson expressed his desire to voluntarily return the pre-Columbian elements and his intention to contribute to the actions of restitution of the cultural heritage of Mexico, within the framework of the 200 years of the beginning of diplomatic relations between both nations. , which will be fulfilled in 2026.

“Our country has implemented a series of legal actions and strategies that have led to the restitution of Mexican cultural heritage located abroad, thanks to the joint efforts of the Secretariats of Foreign Affairs and Culture,” the statement stated.
