Repairs will last until February 6. Gazprom revealed that they have agreed with other pipeline operators.
The repairs are aimed at increasing security of gas supply, Gazprom said, but did not provide further information.
The information published by the joint natural gas and transmission operator JSC “Conexus Baltic Grid” shows that on Thursday the capacity of the Inčukalns underground gas storage reached 10,207 terawatt hours (TWh). In addition, in the last month, from December 12, 2021, the gas pumped from Russia reaches 0.992 TWh, which is atypical.
Conexus’ annual assessment report for 2020 states that in 2020, the maximum daily natural gas consumption in Latvia was 0.068 TWh.
Alternative sources of gas supply to Latvia are Klaipeda LNG and Estonian-Finnish natural gas interconnection “Balticconnector”.
The head of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, blamed Russia on the European natural gas crisis on Wednesday, saying high prices and low levels in gas storage were mainly due to Gazprom’s actions.
“As for European gas … we believe that tensions in European gas markets are due to Russia’s actions,” Birol said. “Unlike other suppliers, including Norway, Algeria and Azerbaijan, which are increasing their supplies to Europe, Gazprom has reduced its exports to Europe by 25% year-on-year in the fourth quarter, despite high market prices.”
Birol pointed out that the decline in Russian gas supplies comes at a time of growing tensions over the concentration of Russian troops on Ukraine’s borders.
