Gazo, PLK, Tayc, Aya Nakamura… French-speaking artists increasingly listened to on Spotify

Here are some of the names of French-speaking artists with an international resonance listed by Spotify, just like the Franco-Malian diva Aya Nakamura who is listened to as far away as Asia.

+ 94% listening in 5 years

Thus, between August 1, 2023 and July 31, 2024, more than 100 million people around the world, or around a sixth of Spotify’s global users, listened to content in French on the Swedish platform. Listening to French-speaking music has jumped 94% in five years.

“It’s really the architecture, the very philosophy of streaming and its technological fluidity that allows directories to be discovered by potentially anyone, anytime, anywhere, in high volumes” , underlined Bruno Crolot, director of international music at Spotify.

Freed from the need for a physical medium, French-speaking music is exported thanks to “exceptional talents”, listeners for whom “understanding the language of the song we listen to is much less significant than in the past”, but also “the existence of editorial teams” of the platform, whose objective is to detect and promote local artists to a wide audience, added Mr. Crolot.

Heavy trend

This attraction for the French-speaking world, also observed on the podcast side, is “a major trend” and “this is only the beginning”, he assured. “The audience base is different from that of Latin music, for example, but we have the artists and we have the wind at our backs. »
