On his channel on YouTube, Awni posted videos about games. In his most viewed video, which now has more than a million views, he stands on the street in Gaza and introduces himself.
In the video, Awni says his goal is to get 100,000 followers. Just before his death, on October 8, the count stood at just over a thousand. His channel now has more than 850,000 followers.
According to Arab media, Awni was killed in an attack by the Israeli air force on his home in eastern Gaza City. That would have happened a day after Hamas fighters attacked Israel.
Hell on earth
Some 3,450 children have been killed in Gaza since October 7, says UNICEF. “Gaza has become a graveyard for thousands of children,” UNICEF spokesman James Elder said yesterday. “For everyone else it’s hell on earth.”
According to Elder, bombs are not the only threat to children in the Gaza Strip. “Gaza’s more than one million children also face a water crisis,” Elder said.
“Gaza’s water production capacity is only 5 percent of usual daily production,” the spokesperson said. “Infant mortality, especially among infants, due to dehydration is a growing threat.”
UNICEF calls for a humanitarian ceasefire to allow aid supplies to Gaza and kidnapped children to be released.
