In line… Israel, US President Donald Trump is moving towards the Palestinian cause, as yesterday Saturday he said that he wants a plan to “home” the Gaza Strip, and proposing that the Palestinians go – “temporarily” or “in the long term” – to Jordan and Egypt.
“We are talking about 1.5 million. people”, and “simply (the purpose is) to house this area”, said the Republican president, who repeated the comparison of the Palestinian enclave with a “demolition site” after fifteen months of war.
Asked if he was referring to a long-term relocation of the citizens of the Gaza Strip, Mr. Trump replied “it could be either one or the other”, adding that this way the Palestinians “will be able to live in peace, for a change”.
The previous US administration had stressed last year that it opposes the forced displacement of Palestinians. Human rights groups, international organizations and aid organizations have long expressed concern about the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip, where the war displaced almost the entire population (2.4 million before the war).
“I told him that I would like him to take more people, because I look at the whole Gaza Strip right now and it’s a mess, it’s a big mess. I’d like him to get people,” said Donald Trump, who began his second term as president on Monday, January 20, referring to a conversation he had with Jordan’s King Abdullah II.
“I would like (also) Egypt to take people”, said Mr. Trump, adding that he would discuss the idea by phone with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi later today.
