Gaza Truce Talks: White House Calls Hamas Response ‘Less Than Encouraging

On Tuesday, the White House considered that the position issued by Hamas so far regarding a proposal that includes a calm in Gaza and an exchange of hostages and detainees is “less than encouraging.”

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said, “We have seen the public statements issued by Hamas, and it can be said that they are less than encouraging,” but he explained that the Qatari mediator in the Cairo negotiations has not yet received a final response from the Palestinian movement.

The mediating countries, namely Qatar, Egypt and the United States, put forward a proposal in three stages, the first of which stipulates a six-week truce, according to a source within Hamas.

The Security Council’s decision to cease fire in Gaza… is it binding to be implemented or do I have an arm?

Hamas said in a statement on Tuesday that, “While it appreciates the great efforts made by the mediators, and with the movement’s keenness to reach an agreement that puts an end to the aggression against our people, the (Israeli) position remains stubborn and has not responded to any of the demands of our people and our resistance. Despite this, the movement’s leadership is considering The proposal was submitted with all national responsibility, and the mediators will be informed of their response once this is completed.”

In addition to a six-week ceasefire, the proposal initially stipulates the release of 42 Israeli hostages in exchange for the release of 800 to 900 Palestinians detained by Israel, the entry of 400 to 500 trucks of food aid daily and the return of displaced persons from northern Gaza to their towns, according to a source in agitation.

Hamas demands a final ceasefire, Israel’s withdrawal of its forces from all parts of the Gaza Strip, and an increase in the flow of aid, at a time when the United Nations says that the entire population of the Strip, numbering about 2.4 million people, is starving.

Last Sunday, Cairo hosted a new round of negotiations between Israel and Hamas, with the participation of delegations from Qatar and the United States of America. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari told the BBC on Tuesday that he was more “optimistic” than he was a few days ago, but that “the negotiations are still far from reaching the finish line.”
