In a dramatic way, the commissioner general of the UN agency for the relief of the Palestinians (UNRWA), Philip Lazzarini, describes the situation in northern Gaza after three weeks of “unstoppable” Israeli bombardments.
According to Lazzarini, throughout the area what prevails is the “smell of death”, as bodies are trapped under debris or are found thrown in the middle of the road. As the staff of his service claims in his related post on X, he reports that there are shortages of water, food and medical care.

As the relevant post states: “Missions to clean up corpses or provide humanitarian aid are rejected. In northern Gaza, people are just waiting to die. They feel abandoned, desperate and alone. They live from one hour to the next, fearing death every second.”
He himself is asking for an “immediate truce”, even for a few hours, so that the Palestinian families can leave safely without being killed by the Israeli bombardments. “This is the minimum to save the lives of civilians who have nothing to do with this conflict,” he adds.
Sweeping mass evacuation orders for the roughly 400,000 people still living in the northern part of the enclave, the blocking of aid and food deliveries and the targeting of civilian infrastructure have led to accusations that Israel is committing a war crime by seeking to forcefully displace the remaining population.
In this context, it is worth noting that just on Monday the Minister of National Security of Israel, the far-right, Itamar Ben Gvir, at a related conference on the… resettlement of Gaza, said: “We will encourage the voluntary transfer of all citizens of Gaza. We will give them the opportunity to move to other countries, because this land belongs to us”.
