UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres described the situation in Gaza Strip Palestine today as “a never-ending humanitarian nightmare for civilians”.

“Their environment was destroyed. Their loved ones were killed. Bombs fell, while the basic things in life were denied: food, water, medicine, electricity,” said Guterres, quoted from CNN.

This message was conveyed by Guterres at the International Humanitarian Conference for the Civilian Population in Gaza which was held in Paris on Thursday (9/11).

The people of Gaza have long been accustomed to living amidst the feud between Israel and Palestine. There have been repeated clashes between countries that have resulted in tens of thousands of civilians dying.

Gaza is a city in the Gaza Strip, Palestine, with a population of more than 700,000 residents. Meanwhile, the population of the Gaza Strip itself reaches 2.3 million people. Gaza is the largest city in Palestine.

The Gaza Strip is flanked by two seas to the west, bordered by Israel to the east, and Egypt’s Sinai peninsula to the south. The location of the Gaza Strip is separate from other Palestinian territories in the West Bank.

Reporting from The Guardianthe majority of Palestinians living in Gaza are refugees and their descendants fleeing Zionist forces during the war to establish Israel in 1948.

The people of Gaza do not want to admit that they are from Gaza because it indicates Israel’s recognition of their land.

Israeli troops first occupied Gaza in 1967 to capture it from Egypt. Israel’s occupation of Gaza ended in 2005 when former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon withdrew 8,000 Jewish settlements in the territory.

In 2006, Hamas succeeded in winning the legislative elections. The results of this election divided the Palestinian government. Gaza is controlled by Hamas, while the West Bank is controlled by the Palestinian Authority which is dominated by Fatah.

Even though Hamas succeeded in controlling Gaza, Israel did not give up control of the area.

Gaza’s basic needs, such as water and electricity, are still under Israeli control. Israel has also repeatedly launched blockades to pressure the government in Gaza.
