Italy’s abstention on the United Nations resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is a slap in the face of humanity. Below is the comment by Stefano Di Carlo, director general of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in Italy.
“While civilians continue to die in Gaza due to intense Israeli bombing, Italy – once again – abstained at the United Nations General Assembly for a ceasefire. We renew our appeal to President Meloni: every day we treat hundreds of war wounded in Gaza, including many women and children, and the humanitarian situation is catastrophic. Not being in favor of the ceasefire means slapping the principle of humanity.
The population of Gaza is exhausted. If we continue to fight, it will not be possible to meet the enormous needs of the people affected by the indiscriminate attacks. Just a few days ago one of our surgeons was injured while working in the Al-Awda hospital and there are now countless attacks on healthcare facilities in the Strip.
MSF once again asks Italy and all the actors involved to work towards an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza”.
