The World Health Organization announced late Friday night that the last major hospital remaining in operation in the northern part of the Gaza Strip was put “out of service” following an Israeli military operation against Hamas.
“The raid (yesterday) morning on the Kamal Antoine Hospital put out of service the last major health center in northern Gaza,” in Beit Lahia, the WHO said via X.
“Initial reports indicate a fire and destruction of several key wings during the raid,” he continued. “60 paramedics and 25 critical patients,” including some on ventilators, “remain in hospital,” the Geneva-based international organization said.
Other patients, in moderate to serious condition, were forcibly transferred to the Indonesian hospital, which, however, is “not functioning”.
The Israeli army announced earlier that it had launched an operation against Hamas militants near the hospital. The Palestinian Islamist movement accused him of actually targeting the health facility.
The operation at Camal Antoine took place the day after the announcement by the director of the institution, Dr. Hussam Abu Shafiya, that five staff members were killed in Israeli shelling. The Israeli army, asked about this by AFP, did not comment on the specific blow.
