Gaza in Crisis: Urgent Appeal for Aid and Humanitarian Action

Kate Phillips-Barrasso, Mercy Corps’ vice president of global policy and spokeswoman, said Thursday that Gaza is running out of time. The statement comes ahead of the vote in the UN Security Council on aid to Gaza – a vote that has been postponed three times.

– Gaza has no more time. We need a resolution that calls for a suspension of hostilities so that we can actually deliver aid to starving people who have not had their basic needs covered for two months, says Phillips-Barrasso, according to The Guardian.

Hell on earth

– The misery in Gaza is endless for those trapped in what has become “hell on earth”, says WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a statement on X.

He adds that he has lost count of all the times he has thought that the crisis in Gaza could not get any worse.

In addition to the lack of food, water and fuel, the situation around the health facilities in Gaza is critical.

“There are no fully functional hospitals in Gaza today,” states the World Health Organization’s (WHO) regional office in a statement.

– Gaza’s health system urgently needs revival, they write.

Out of a total of 36 hospitals, only four of the hospitals have any functionality. Nine hospitals are partially functioning, while the majority, 23 hospitals, are completely out of business.

Arrested paramedics

There are constant new reports of attacks on hospitals and civilians in Gaza. Last Monday, the Gaza Strip’s largest hospital, the Shifa hospital, was hit by an airstrike.

Pictures from the scene show several lifeless people on the ground in the hospital area.

On Thursday, the Palestinian Red Crescent (PRCS) also reports that communication with the Jabalia ambulance center in northern Gaza has been interrupted.

“We received reports that Israeli forces entered the center two hours ago, arrested crews and paramedics and took them to an unknown location. Women and children remain trapped alone inside,” PCRS wrote in a message at 6:30 p.m.

– It can hardly get worse

According to several organizations, the situation in Gaza is completely inhumane. A UN report shows that every fourth resident of Gaza is now experiencing famine.

In total, there are 576,000 Palestinians who are now experiencing catastrophic famine because not enough emergency aid is being let in.

– It can hardly get worse, says chief economist Arif Husain at the World Food Program (WFP), according to NTB.

– I have never before seen anything similar to what is now happening in Gaza. At such a speed and on such a scale.

After the Hamas attack on October 7, Israel stopped all shipments of food, water, medicine and fuel to Gaza.

After extensive pressure from the US and aid organisations, some supplies have since been opened, but according to the UN, these cover only 10 per cent of the needs on the besieged strip of land.
