Gaza Housing Crisis: More than 70% of Units Uninhabitable – Official Palestinian Report

Report: More than 70% of the housing units in Gaza have become uninhabitable

An official Palestinian report revealed today, Thursday, that more than 70 percent of the housing units in the Gaza Strip have become uninhabitable as a result of the war launched by Israel against Gaza since October 7, pointing out that Israel has seized about 50 One thousand dunams of West Bank land last year.

The report issued by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics on the occasion of Palestinian Land Day, which falls on March 30 of each year, said that Israel has destroyed more than 31,000 buildings since last October 7.

The report stated that about 17,000 buildings were severely damaged, while more than 41,000 buildings were moderately damaged, bringing the number of damaged buildings to about 89,000 buildings, including more than 100 United Nations buildings.

The report estimated the number of completely destroyed housing units at no less than 79,000 housing units, in addition to the partial destruction of more than 290,000 housing units, constituting in total about 70 percent of the housing units.

He pointed out the destruction of schools, universities, hospitals, mosques, churches, and government headquarters, in addition to thousands of economic facilities, infrastructure, and agricultural lands, making the Gaza Strip an unlivable place.

According to the report, the Israeli authorities destroyed and demolished more than 659 buildings and facilities, completely or partially, including 70 self-demolition operations in East Jerusalem, in addition to issuing 1,333 demolition orders for Palestinian facilities under the pretext of not having a permit.

He pointed out that the areas of land seized by the Israeli authorities in the West Bank in 2023 amounted to 50,526 dunums, compared to about 26 thousand dunums in 2022.

The report stated that last year, the Israeli authorities issued 32 seizure orders for approximately 619 dunums, four expropriation orders for approximately 433 dunums, and two orders to declare state land for approximately 515 dunums.

Regarding settlements and military bases, at the end of 2022 there were 483 sites in the West Bank, distributed into 151 colonies, 188 colonial outposts, and 144 other classified sites, which include (industrial, tourist, service areas, and Israeli army camps).

As for the number of settlers, it reached 745,467 settlers at the end of 2022, most of whom live in Jerusalem, 336,272 (constituting 45.1 percent of the total settlers), and the rest are distributed in the West Bank.

According to the report, the ratio of settlers to Palestinians in the West Bank is about 23 settlers for every 100 Palestinians, while the highest ratio in Jerusalem is about 69 settlers for every 100 Palestinians.

He pointed out that the year 2023 witnessed a significant increase in the pace of construction and expansion of settlements, as the Israeli authorities approved many structural plans to build more than 18,000 settlement units in the West Bank, including Jerusalem.

The estimated number of Palestinians in the world at the end of 2023 was about 14.63 million people, 5.55 million of whom reside in the State of Palestine, and about 1.75 million Palestinians in Israel, while the number of Palestinians in the Arab countries reached about 6.56 million Palestinians, and about 772 thousand in foreign countries.
