Five people were killed today in an Israeli airstrike on a school that had been turned into a shelter for displaced people in Gaza City, the Palestinian enclave’s Civil Protection said, with the Israeli military claiming that the strike was aimed at Hamas militants.
“Five witnesses, including two children and a woman, were pulled dead from the rubble after Israeli warplanes bombarded the Suhanda al-Zeytoun school with two missiles,” Gaza Civil Protection spokesman Mahmoud Bassal told AFP.
The school housed thousands of displaced Palestinians, he added, adding that many people were injured in the Israeli strike.
The Israeli military, for its part, emphasized that it carried out a “precision strike” on the school compound, targeting Hamas fighters.
“Hamas terrorists used school grounds to plan and carry out terrorist attacks against Israeli soldiers and the State of Israel,” the Israeli military said.
The Israeli military has in recent months bombed several schools that have been turned into shelters for displaced people, accusing Hamas of using civilians as human shields and hiding militant fighters among the civilian population. The Palestinian movement denies this claim.
On Wednesday, an Israeli attack on a school run by the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) in Nuseirat in the central Gaza Strip killed at least 18 people, according to Civil Protection.
Israel claimed the strike was aimed at “terrorists”, while UN officials said six UN agency workers were among the victims.
