On August 10, Israel bombed the Al-Tabaeen school located in East Gaza, killing at least 80 Palestinians. About 6,000 refugees were accommodated in the school building.
The UN Human Rights Office had said it was “horrified by the evolving pattern” of attacks on schools. The regional director of the organization “Save the children”, Tamer Kirolos, had declared that it was the deadliest attack since October 2023 and had mentioned, among other things, that “it is shocking to see the cost it has caused , the attack, including so many children.” This specific attack had reached such great proportions that even the White House was forced to express concern after the attacks.
With the help of Unicef and other organizations, families started to clean the school to make it a place full of life again. Until this initiative, “blood and debris marked the floors of this site where hundreds of displaced Palestinian families had made a temporary home,” Unicef said.
To make the country’s resettlement possible, according to the agency, UNICEF distributed hygiene kits containing floor mops, cleaning and disinfecting solutions, gloves, garbage bags, bleach, wipes and sponges. Also Unicef and partner organizations in the field distributed 10 cubic meters of drinking water with a tank and 210 plastic buckets.
According to Unicef there is a network of humanitarian organizations dedicated to water, sanitation and hygiene working with 33 other agencies in the Gaza Strip to assess and respond to the urgent needs of 2.1 million Palestinians. Also in addition to basic cleaning supplies, the network of organizations managed to deliver 755,459 liters of fuel in July. This is a very important aid, as fuel is cut off from the Gaza Strip, but it is vital to ensure the functioning of the wells and pumps that support regular access to water.
85% of all schools in Gaza have been damaged, damaged or destroyed since the start of the war, even as they served as shelters for the displaced.
As Unicef notes, as Palestinians need to hold on to anything familiar in this ever-changing landscape of rubble and destruction, cleaning their temporary home is an important act of survival.
It is recalled that a few days ago Unicef through its representative, James Elder, described Gaza as the true embodiment of hell on earth for its one million children.” In fact, he stated that in the last year more than 40 children die in Gaza every day.
