Doctors in Gaza create makeshift clinics in refugee camps amid catastrophic conditions

Doctors in Gaza have expressed their deep concern over the dire situation prevailing in the refugee camps, especially among children, as diseases continue to spread rampantly. With most hospitals either closed or on the verge of collapse, medical professionals have resorted to setting up treatment tents on the streets with limited supplies.

One such doctor serving the community is Dr Rajaa Okashah, a dedicated pediatrician from northern Gaza who had to relocate to Rafah due to the ongoing conflict. Dr Okashah’s commitment to medicine and his love for fellow Gazans keeps him going, transforming his tent into a street clinic.

“I decided to open this medical tent to provide them with medicines and treatment for free, especially as the health system in Gaza now lacks hospitals, lacks health centers,” Dr Okashah told Sky News. He further emphasized the alarming rise in viruses and bacteria, resulting in epidemics such as hepatitis A, particularly affecting the vulnerable children due to their weak immunity.

Despite the immense challenges, over 20,000 infants have been born in Gaza since the war commenced.

“The most critical conditions I encounter are respiratory problems, especially in newborn babies up to three months old,” explained Dr Okashah. He further lamented the overcrowded situation in pediatric hospitals, with three to four children squeezed into a single bed. In such circumstances, infants are even forced to sleep on the floor, exacerbating the challenges related to respiratory problems, chest infections, and various other health issues.

Doctors in Gaza have told Sky News that the situation is 'catastrophic'

Doctors in Gaza face the arduous task of rationing medicine to those most in need, making hospitalization an option only for the most urgent cases. Tragically, post-natal depression among new mothers has witnessed a dramatic surge. Dr Muhammad al Raqeb, a dedicated young gynecologist from Khan Yunis, is now providing prenatal care to 50-70 expectant mothers daily in his tent.

Despite the challenges that these mothers face, Dr al Raqeb acknowledges the resilience of Gaza, noting, “Gaza will never lose hope.” He believes the medical tent is a beacon of hope, spreading smiles and promoting health among the residents.

It is the unwavering dedication of these doctors in Gaza that prevents the death toll from skyrocketing. Battling for medicine, clean water, and safe working spaces, they fight a war of their own. Yet, the line between life and death in Gaza hangs precariously.
