Gaza: Death toll exceeds 40,000 – Ceasefire talks begin in Doha – 2024-08-18 03:29:12

Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip have claimed the lives of at least 40,005 Palestinians, while 92,401 have been injured since October 7, the Palestinian enclave’s health ministry announced today.

Forty Palestinians were killed and 107 wounded in the past 24 hours, the ministry added.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a statement regarding the rising death toll in Gaza.

“Today marks a grim milestone for the world,” Volker Turk said.

“This unthinkable situation is overwhelmingly due to the Israeli military’s repeated failures to comply with the rules of war,” he noted.

“As the world reflects and considers its inability to prevent this carnage, I call on all parties to agree to an immediate ceasefire, lay down their weapons and stop the killing once and for all,” he added.

Talks have begun in Qatar

Talks aimed at reaching a Gaza ceasefire and a deal to release hostages have begun in Doha, an official with knowledge of the negotiations told Reuters.

Israel’s intelligence chief is expected to participate in the new round of talks along with his US and Egyptian partners and Qatar’s prime minister.

Hamas is not taking part in the talks, but has stressed it will talk to mediators if there are “developments or a serious response from Israel.”
