Hamas Announces Release of Four Israeli Hostages in Ongoing Prisoner Swap Deal
In a significant development in the ongoing Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement, Hamas announced on Friday the names of four Israeli women soldiers set to be released on Saturday. The hostages, identified as Gilboa, name Levi, and Luri Albag, are part of a broader hostage-for-prisoner swap deal that has seen both sides exchange captives over the past week.
This marks the sixth day of the temporary truce, which has brought a fragile pause to the 15-month conflict that has devastated Gaza and claimed thousands of lives. According to reports, the exchange is expected to begin on Saturday, following the release of three Israeli women and 90 Palestinian prisoners earlier in the week.
Israel has pledged to release 50 Palestinian prisoners for every Israeli soldier freed by Hamas. Officials estimate that this arrangement could lead to the release of up to 200 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the four hostages. “the second step is to make Palestinian prisoners available to the Israeli hostages,” a source close to the negotiations stated.
The ceasefire, brokered with the support of the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, represents the first sustained pause in hostilities since a brief agreement in November 2023. Hamas has agreed to free 33 hostages in this phase, in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
Though, challenges remain. While three Israeli women were released on Sunday, 94 hostages are still believed to be held in Gaza. The conflict, which began after Hamas attacks on the Israeli army in 2023, has resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and over 250 others. gaza authorities report that 47,000 Palestinians have been killed during the fighting.
Future negotiations will focus on securing the release of the remaining hostages and addressing the broader issues of withdrawal from Gaza. The humanitarian toll of the conflict continues to weigh heavily on both sides, with significant damage to infrastructure and livelihoods.
