A ground attack by the Israeli army on the town of Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, “could lead to a bloodbath”, the head of the World Health Organization warned today in a message on the X social media.
“WHO is deeply concerned that a large-scale military operation in Rafah, Gaza, could lead to a bloodbath and further weaken a health system already on its knees,” writes Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, of the city in which 1.2 million Palestinians have gathered seeking refuge there.
Currently, the Israeli army continues to bombard the city, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to launch a ground offensive to “exterminate” as he declares the last brigades of Hamas.
European leaders, the UN and the United States, Israel’s main ally, have urged Netanyahu not to proceed with a ground attack on the city.
Apart from the cost in human lives, an attack would be a “severe blow to humanitarian operations across the Gaza Strip” as Rafah “is at the heart of humanitarian operations”, a spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned today. (OCHA) Jens Larke, in Geneva.
The head of the CIA in Cairo
The head of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) William Burns arrived in the Egyptian capital today for meetings that will focus on the conflict in Gaza, according to an Egyptian security source and three other sources at Cairo airport.
Egypt, along with Qatar and the United States, is leading mediation efforts between Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages held in Gaza.
