Gaza: ‘A war on women’s health’ – Revealing UN report – 2024-10-03 00:59:46

With the State of Israel promoting a generalized conflagration throughout the Middle East, and the daily killings continuing, some very serious issues have unfortunately been pushed to the background. One of the very important issues that is greatly exacerbated by the destruction of health infrastructure is undoubtedly the health of women and its dramatic deterioration, which is described in the report of the UN Women (UN Women) with the distinctive title: “Alarm on Gender: Gaza: A War on Women’s Health

The figures reported on the official UN website are revealing, as 177,000 women in Gaza face health risks that can lead to their death. In fact, it is noted that there are 162,000 women who face serious non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular or hypertensive diseases, with the most vulnerable undoubtedly being older women. The report specifically states that 30,841 women face the risk of diabetes, 107,443 the risk of hypertension, 18,583 the risk of cardiovascular disease and 5,201 cancer.

In fact, for the latter, it is noted that while they need treatment immediately, all services that could help are suspended. In fact, the UN researchers were able to interview seven women in this situation and all of them stated that they cannot have any access to treatment and medication.
The report also notes that due to overcrowding in shelters and poor water quality, hundreds of thousands of people have suffered from acute respiratory infections, jaundice, diarrhea and skin rashes. The report notes that women are a much more vulnerable population due to the conditions, with a typical example being that they account for 2/3 of the cases of gastrointestinal diseases and hepatitis A.

In addition, it is estimated that 155,000 pregnant and lactating women face barriers to prenatal and postnatal care. Among the pregnant women interviewed for this report, almost all experienced difficulties related to nutrition. It is indicative that about 69 percent had experienced complications such as urinary tract infections, anemia, premature birth and hypertensive disorders. Of course, an important aspect of the problem is also mental health. Typically, about 75% of women stated that they regularly feel depressed – 62% often cannot sleep and 65% often feel nervous and are tormented by nightmares.

Therefore, as proven in yet another report by a reputable organization, it is the entire life of thousands of people in Palestine that has turned into a nightmare. And of course, as one would expect, this nightmare hits the most vulnerable social groups, such as women, the most. But what one would not expect, if one were to believe Israel’s official positions, would be how a state that officially claims for itself that it promotes equality between men and women, ultimately with the supposed goal of saving women from the adversaries of, would lead them to this daily hell.
