The spokesman for the Israeli armed forces said today that Israeli soldiers “have killed more than 17,000 terrorists” in Gaza, where the war between Israel and Hamas, which is also supported by other Palestinian armed movements, entered its eleventh month.
“Our forces continue to fight in Gaza (…) we have so far killed more than 17,000 terrorists,” said Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari.
Reuters notes that the armed forces declined to elaborate on whether the word “exterminated” refers to those who have been killed or if it also includes those who have been captured or wounded.
AFP also points out that this figure is impossible to verify and that Hamas refuses to disclose its losses. The Hamas government’s health ministry has announced 40,005 deaths since the start of the war on October 7, without distinguishing between dead civilians and dead fighters.
Ceasefire talks
A White House spokesman today spoke of a “positive start” to the talks that have just begun in Doha focused on reaching a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip.
John Kirby, the spokesman for the US National Security Council, said he expected talks to continue tomorrow, adding: “We are at a point where the framework of the agreement has been broadly accepted and the gaps that need to be filled are its implementation”.
