Gavriil Sakellaridis: Why did he leave SYRIZA and active politics on the Left? – 2024-02-22 12:51:57

The former government representative of the Tsipras government and SYRIZA MP Gavriel Sakellaridis returns to the political scene of the country after 9 years of absence.

Mr. Sakellaridis takes an active role in the KO of the New Left, as head of political planning.

The first timid steps to return had begun after the resignation of Alexis Tsipras as President of SYRIZA, when in a question he had received about it, he left the possibility open saying that he did not rule it out: “It will depend on the developments.”

Although politically active since the age of 18, when he joined the Coalition Youth, he has been absent for almost 10 years, after resigning from the Government in November 2015 at the request of then Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Mr. Sakellaridis had announced his intention to abstain from a roll-call vote in the Parliament regarding the prerequisites of the memorandum.

During the telephone conversation he had with Alexis Tsipras at the time, the Prime Minister emphasized to Mr. Sakellaridis that since he voted in favor of the memorandum, he should also vote for all the prerequisite measures.

In his resignation letter, Mr. Sakellaridis stated that for him “withdrawal from the central political scene is the only way forward”, while as a reason for his resignation he stated that “he is unable to contribute to the implementation of government policy”. He himself at the time did not hide his displeasure with many of the measures the government has agreed to.

In an interview with ERT a few years later, in 2022, he referred to his decision saying that it had to do with his ideology. “I had responsibilities and I took them on,” he emphasized.

In fact, it took almost 10 hours to write the resignation letter.

Now a new chapter is opening for him through the “New Left” of Alexis Haritsis.
