Gennaro Gattuso denied that he became a coach Valencia because Jorge Mendes. Mendes has a close relationship with the owner of Valencia, Peter Lim.
Gattuso has been officially appointed as Valencia’s new coach. He fills the place left by the sacked Jose Bordalas. Bordalas lost his post after the Black Bats only finished in 9th place.
Gattuso’s appointment as Valencia coach has caused controversy. Some believe that the former AC Milan player got the job because his agent Jorge Mendes is close to Valencia owner Peter Lim. Gattuso’s appointment was seen as a trick by Mendes to make a profit.
Gattuso with Mendes reportedly met Peter Lim, and former Valencia president, Anil Murthy on 29 May in Singapore. Anil Murthy has now resigned from Valencia because the recording of his voice related to the chaos in the body of Los Ches was spread.
However, Gattuso denied his meeting with Valencia officials was carried out together with Mendes. He did also meet Mendes in Singapore, but on a different occasion.
“I left Milan on May 29 to go to Singapore with Anil Murthy, then the day after this news emerged that he had resigned. I did not go with Jorge MendesI met him there the day after tomorrow,” said Gattuso quoted by Football Italia.
Valencia is the ninth club in Gattuso’s coaching career. The man nicknamed Rino has previously coached Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete, Pisa, AC Milan Primavera, AC Milan and Napoli. His best achievement is delivering Napoli to the 2019/2020 Coppa Italia champion.
Last season, Gattuso did not coach any club. He was introduced as Fiorentina coach at the beginning of the 2021/2022 season. But before his contract at La Viola runs, he decided to resign.
Mendes is also rumored to be the cause of Gattuso’s decision. This is called because Fiorentina do not want to pay a commission for Mendes.
